7 reasons to visit Morocco

Looking for the best places to visit in Morocco? Discover our highlights of Morocco, from markets and souks to mountains and deserts.

1.The Sahara’s sunsets, sunrises, and stars

Visit the largest desert in the world for once-in-a-lifetime experiences you’ll remember for years to come. Our Morocco tours include the opportunity to do activities like sunrise camel rides and camping out in the desert – giving one of the best views of the stars in the world.

2. Scenic mountains

Morocco’s vast Atlas Mountain range encompasses the majority of the country. Mount Toubkal, or Jebel Toubkal, is the highest point in the High Atlas Mountains and offers spectacular views. The most direct route up Toubkal only takes a few hours and can easily be fit into a long weekend or short break. You can also take a longer route to explore other passes and valleys in the area. Stay in Berber villages along the way and learn about their traditional way of life.

3. Colourful markets (souks)

Immerse yourself in the sights, smells, and sounds of Morocco’s souks. With a plethora of colorful wares on offer, you can pick up a cheap souvenir from your vacation by haggling with the traders. Not only are souvenirs available, but also exotic spices, food to try, and little hole-in-the-wall spots to escape for a mint tea. It’s a great way to experience Morocco’s hustle and bustle culture. Marrakech, also known as the ‘Red City,’ has some of the largest and best souks.

4. Vibrant imperial cities

Fes, Marrakech, Meknes, and Rabat are Morocco’s four imperial cities. Each of the cities has served as Morocco’s capital at some point; Rabat is the current capital. We visit Marrakech on all of our Morocco tours, so you will undoubtedly have the opportunity to explore this fascinating city and its vast souks. Take our Grand Tour of Morocco to see all four cities. This vacation will allow you to explore Morocco’s beautiful and historic medinas as well as immerse yourself in its culture. Each city has its own distinct personality, from grand and bustling Fes with its colorful tanneries to more laid-back Meknes.

5. Great hiking and cycling

Outside of the imperial cities, there is a vast landscape to explore by foot or bicycle. Of course, the Atlas Mountains have fantastic hiking trails, but Todra Gorge is also a great place to go for a walk. This hike through a series of limestone river canyons lined with ochre-colored cliffs is very enjoyable.
Or, for a different way to see Morocco, consider our Southern Oasis Cycling Tour. This tour explores less-traveled valleys and mountain passes. We drive up into the Atlas Mountains and bike down through several scenic mountain passes into the Draa Valley, Morocco’s largest date palm oasis.

6. Golden sand beaches

If you visit Morocco’s coast, you will find beautiful golden sand beaches that are ideal for relaxing or participating in water sports. We visit Essaouira beach on many of our Morocco vacations, including our Family Atlas Adventure, where young children and teens will enjoy learning to surf.

7. Delicious food

Moroccan cuisine is well-known around the world for its tagines, falafel, couscous, bread, and pastries. You will not be disappointed if you visit Morocco for authentic food such as tagines. The smells hit you as you walk through the souks, and the vibrant colors of the spice piles are a visual feast. On our tours, our guides will be happy to recommend local cafes and restaurants that serve traditional cuisine, as opposed to tourist traps. We also visit Berber villages and desert camps off the beaten path, where you can sample authentic Moroccan cuisine.
