“Metro Manila,” won the Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Oscar Ramirez and his family who decide to move from the poverty-stricken rice terraces of Banaue and try their luck in Metro Manila. He lands the dangerous job of driving an armored truck and finds himself involved in a long-planned heist.
The movie’s production notes said shooting in the Philippines was a “grueling yet extraordinary” experience for the director. “From the extreme poverty found in the slums to the enigmatic beauty of Banaue’s rice fields, the cast and crew found nothing but smiling faces and welcoming people eager to help with the filming.
