Israel to Reopen for Fully Vaccinated on Jan. 9, 2022

Israel’s Health Ministry has announced that its borders will reopen to some tourists on January 9, 2022.

For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Israel reopened to foreign tourists in early November 2021, but by the end of the month, it had again banned foreign visitors due to the Omicron variant.

Foreign visitors who have not been vaccinated or recovered will still be denied entry into Israel.

Non-Israeli tourists from Orange and Green countries who have been vaccinated and recovered may travel to Israel as of January 9, 2022. Travelers from the Red countries are still barred entry.

Who is recognized by Israel as having been vaccinated or recovered?

  1. Those who received a World Health Organization (WHO)-approved vaccine – vaccines manufactured by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Sinopharm, Bharat Biotech, the Serum Institute of India, and Johnson and Johnson.
Israel also acknowledges the vaccination status of those who have received the Sputnik vaccine (on the condition that they receive a positive result on a serologic test taken in Israel)

The vaccine must be administered in accordance with Israel’s protocol, which states that those who have been immunized must:

  1. Receive two vaccine doses (or one vaccine dose in the case of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine), and at least 14 days have passed since the second vaccination on the day of arrival in Israel (but not more than 180 at the time of leaving Israel). The date of vaccination is not taken into account.
  2. Be vaccinated with a booster shot and allow 14 days or more from the date of vaccination to arrive in Israel.
  3. Carriers of a recovery certificate that can be digitally verified in the Ministry of Health’s system based on an NAAT test result (a molecular test similar to PCR):

Those who arrived in Israel more than 11 days after their NAAT test (but no more than 190 days on the date of their departure from Israel).
All passengers arriving in Israel must undergo a PCR test at the airport. They must then quarantine for 24 hours or until the PCR test results are negative. The results are usually available in less than 24 hours.
Tourists from all countries will be allowed to visit Israel beginning January 9, 2022, with the exception of the following Red countries: Ethiopia, Mexico, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey, the UAE, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Visitors from Red countries must obtain special permission in advance to enter the country.
