Hungary Removes All COVID-19 Entry Requirements

Travellers from other countries who plan to visit Hungary are no longer required to meet entry rules as the latter’s authorities have decided to remove all the restrictions that were imposed to contain the spread of the COVID-19.

The Hungarian government announced that incoming travellers, regardless of the country of their origin, are no longer required to present a vaccination or recovery certificate. In addition, they are also exempted from the requirement to present a negative COVID-19 test result taken before entry, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

This means that everyone will now be permitted restriction-free entry to Hungary as long as they hold other valid travel documents, in this case, a passport or a visa for those who cannot enter the country visa-free.

“Travel restrictions previously imposed due to the epidemic situation have been lifted. In accordance with this, it is possible to enter the territory of Hungary by public road, railway, water, and air traffic – regardless of citizenship and protection against the coronavirus –, but other general conditions of entry (e.g., a valid travel document) must be provided,” the statement of the Hungarian authorities reads.

Travel experts believe that the abolishment of entry rules will help Hungary to attract more tourists and boost the country’s economy. The country is expected to register an increased number of visitors in the upcoming months.

Except for lifting the entry rules for incoming travellers, Hungary has also abolished the majority of its national COVID-19 restrictions.

Travellers, as well as citizens of Hungary, are no longer required to present a vaccination or recovery pass when accessing restaurants, bars, cafes, museums, theatres, cinemas, shopping centres, and other events.

Moreover, the country’s authorities have also decided to abolish the requirement to wear a mask when in different enclosed spaces, including public transport.

Apart from Hungary, two other European Economic Area countries – Iceland and Norway – and two other European Union countries – Slovenia and Ireland – have also already removed all of their measures.

Since last month, travellers have been able to enter Iceland without having to follow any entry or national COVID-19 rules.

Norway ended all of its restrictions on February 12 too. The country now permits restriction-free entry to all travellers regardless of the vaccination or recovery status or their country of origin.

The Slovenian authorities also noted that everyone is now exempt from entry and domestic restrictions.

Similarly, Ireland announced that since March 6, no one is no longer required to meet entry rules.
