10 Places to Enjoy the Winter in South Korea

Here are the 10 Places to Enjoy the Winter in South Korea.

Throughout the year, the climate in South Korea shifts from one extreme to the other. – sizzling hot in the height of summertime, and bone-chilling cold in the winter.

Winter weather tends to last for many months, from November all the way to even April.

That’s a long time of cold to deal with. While many of you may be tempted to stay indoors and hibernate, there are many ways you can enjoy the beauty and experiences of Korea during this time. Here are 10 of my favorite places to enjoy the winter in South Korea.

Here are our picks on 10 places you have to visit in Korea during winter!

1. Everland Theme Park

Everland is South Korea’s largest amusement park and it’s also a couple and family-friendly destination. The theme park is home to one of the steepest wooden roller coasters in the world! During winter, the theme park transforms its five themed zones into a winter wonderland!

Visitors during winter love to take photos with a huge Christmas tree that they put up in the middle of the park. Lights and winter-themed attractions such as sledding and special parades are added to Everland. Don’t forget to catch the fireworks!

2. Nami Island

Experience the beautiful scenery at Nami Island! Famous for being in the Korean drama “Winter Sonata”, Nami Island is located just outside of Seoul, and many people consider it to be a great romantic winter destination in Korea!

3. Gangchon Rail Park

If you’ve seen many of your friends post about this place on social media, but don’t know what it’s called, here it is: Gangchon Rail Park! The rail tracks at Gangchon Rail Park are on an abandoned, rustic railway track that you can cycle through while enjoying the scenic view of the countryside.

Pedal your way around and marvel at the amazing Bukhangang River, which freezes over during the winter. You’ll get to cycle through forests covered in snow too – it’s just such a magical experience!

4. The Garden of Morning Calm

Well-known as one of the 50 most beautiful places in Korea, The Garden of Morning Calm sure lives up to the hype! Surrounded by what was once a carpet of lush, green grass, the area is blanketed by snow during the wintertime.

Catch the garden’s famous lighting festival that showcases vibrant lights and colors. The festival lasts from December to March every year, and you shouldn’t miss it when you’re there!

Want to visit Nami Island, The Garden of Morning Calm, and ride on the Gangchon railway tracks? Check out this winter day tour that will take you to all these places. You don’t have to fuss about booking your entrance passes when you’re there and think about how to get there – we’ve got you covered for that!

5. Glorious View of Seoul Atop Bukhansan

The highest mountain point in the Seoul region is Bukhansan, north of Hangang River and on the outskirts of the capital. Hiking and climbing are a big part of Korean life, enjoyed year-round.

6. Jeju Island

If Korea is on your list, I highly recommend trying to make Jeju Island part of your travel itinerary. And if you do happen to go to Jeju Island, then Hallasan – the highest mountain Korea at 1900m – is a must climb.

7. Pocheon Herb Island Festive Lights

Under 1.5 hours north of Seoul is Pocheon Herb Island, a collection of herb themes and gardens mixed in with seasonal sightseeing spots of various styles.

Whereas Garden of the Morning Calm was far busier, bigger, and livelier, Pocheon Herb Island was a more peaceful change of pace.

8. Ice Skate at Namsan Banyan Tree

Several ice rink sites around central Seoul, are very affordable, however, they are also insanely busy and crowded. If you’re looking for a quieter location that’s situated in a nice area, less busy, and more relaxing, visit the ice rink at Banyan Tree 5-Star Luxury hotel in Namsan.

9. COEX Mall Starfield Library

If you’re in Seoul, the Starfield Library in COEX Mall, Gangnam is a great place to visit during this time of the year. You may already have it on your itinerary, as it’s essentially a free public library built straight into the mall with vast selections of books to read.

10. Stroll Through Damyang Bamboo Forest

Damyang is a quiet town less than an hour from Gwangju in Jeollanam-do. The bamboo forest ( 죽녹원) is a standout place in Korea and is a beautiful place to visit in the winter as well as the summer. Go in the winter and you can enjoy serene walks along the many paths as it is a quiet season and far less busy.

There are many more places to enjoy in South Korea during the winter so check back for more awesome places to visit as I share my favorite spots.
