What if passports could also be considered works of art in their own right? They reveal the varied landscapes and historic landmarks that make each destination unique. Some people think of passports as nothing more than legal documents.

Could this be the world’s most elegant passport? The new Norwegian passport design features a minimalist and visually soothing cover with gold embossed Norway’s coat of arms. The Norwegian government issued the first batch of these passports on October 19, 2020. In comparison to other passport designs, Norway’s official travel document features pastel colors in bright red, turquoise, and white for regular passports, diplomatic passports, and emergency passports.

Under ultraviolet lights, these pages come to life with vivid holographic images of the night skies and the Northern Lights. Flipping the pages of Norway’s passport, you can see illustrations that depict sweeping landscapes of fjords, mountains, lakes, forests, and rivers.

Finland

The burgundy red passport of Finland combines the best of Scandinavian design with innovative thinking and creativity. One of the best things to greet travelers admiring their passport stamps is a moose strutting through the pages. In 2019, the country was recognized as a top wildlife travel destination.

The Royal Coat of Arms is embossed on Canada’s navy blue passport. For its travel freedom, it has been dubbed the world’s fourth most powerful passport. Under UV light, hidden illustrations reveal technicolor hues. Maple leaves, historical figures, ships at sea, spectacular fireworks in Ottawa, and, of course, the Niagara Falls are among these.

According to the Henley Passport Index 2020, Switzerland has the world’s seventh most powerful passport. The Swiss passport reflects the country’s linguistic diversity by being written in the country’s four official languages. The passport design in Switzerland is just as durable and efficient as the Swiss watches.

In January 2022, the newly redesigned Belgian passport was released, and it left us speechless! With a gilded crest and an embossed shape of the country, the burgundy cover stays true to tradition, but the pages take a more playful approach. The interior had previously featured famous landmarks.

However, it has now been replaced with illustrations of characters from well-known Belgian comic strips — for example, Tintin and the Smurfs! After all, the country is known for its thriving comics scene, which has spanned decades.

Australia

Australia is the first country to use 3M™ Color Floating Image technology in their passports. Images of kangaroos appear to float off the page when the pages are tilted at a certain angle and viewed under UV light. The Commonwealth Coat of Arms is emblazoned in the center of Australia’s blue passport.

Slovenia

We can’t help but fix our eyes on the design of Slovenia’s crest, which consists of a shield with three six-pointed stars over Mount Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia. Like many passports in Europe, the Slovenian passport comes with a burgundy cover. On the other hand, it also takes a page from the Finnish passport by appearing like a flipbook. Underneath the depiction of this mountain, two curved lines represent the rivers that run throughout the country.

Lebanon

Cedar trees have great historical significance in Lebanon, where ancient cedar forests once thrived in abundance across Mount Lebanon. A cedar tree is the centrepiece of the Lebanese passport, which comes in navy blue to mimic the colour of the Mediterranean Sea. Inside, the pages reveal illustrations of historical landmarks such as Beirut Forest, Sidon Castle, Hasbaya Shehabi Citadel, and more. The Lebanese Directorate General of General Security issued new biometric Lebanese passports on 1 August 2016.

You wouldn’t be the first to wonder why the chrysanthemum, rather than the cherry blossom, is Japan’s passport flower of choice — a bare-faced cover with no national coat of arms and only a gold-colored flower on a red background. There is no national coat of arms for Japan; instead, it has a gold-colored flower on a red background. Autumn, harvest, nobility, and the Japanese nation as a whole are all represented by the chrysanthemum flower.

The British passport features attractions such as the London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Houses of Parliament, and even the London Underground, in addition to the royal coat of arms on the front cover.

Philippines

The Philippines’ e-passport design is another example of how a passport can reflect a country’s identity and cultural heritage.
