Bangkok 241st anniversary celebration: 21-25 April 2023
On April 21st, 1782, Bangkok was founded. Its Old Town, also known as Rattanakosin Island, is situated in the Phra Nakhon district, next to the Chao Phraya River.
The National Museum Bangkok and the National Theatre will host the opening ceremony of the five-day event. Throughout the duration of the celebration, there will be cultural performances, a night museum, a retro-style food market, and a fair selling cultural products from Thailand’s 76 provinces and Bangkok’s 50 districts.
To commemorate the 241st anniversary of Bangkok’s establishment, the Ministry of Culture has planned a range of events and activities from April 21st to 25th, 2023. These will take place at various museums, temples, and significant landmarks in Rattanakosin Island, also known as Bangkok’s Old Town. The aim is to honor and celebrate the legacy of Phra Bat Somdet Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok Maharaj (King Rama I), the founder of the Rattanakosin Kingdom and the first monarch of the Chakri Dynasty, as well as all the kings of the Chakri Dynasty.
On April 21st, 1782, Bangkok was founded. Located in the Phra Nakhon district along the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok’s Old Town or Rattanakosin Island is home to some of the city’s most famous and frequently visited landmarks. These include the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram (also known as Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha), and Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha).
The five-day event will primarily take place at the National Museum Bangkok, the National Theatre, Santi Chai Prakan Park, Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center, Museum Siam, Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan, and Bang Lamphu Museum. Additionally, there will be 20 other venues hosting related events and activities.
On April 20th, the National Museum Bangkok and the National Theatre will host worshipping rituals to commemorate the founding anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin. The next day, on April 21st, merit-making ceremonies will take place at Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho), followed by a ceremony to worship the City Pillar Shrine.
Santi Chai Prakan Park will host events and activities from April 21st to May 7th, including an exhibition honoring all the kings of the Chakri Dynasty, multimedia shows celebrating 241 years of Bangkok, an illuminated tunnel, open-air cinema, and orchestral performances.
Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center will organize a photo contest on the 241 years of Krung Rattanakosin, workshops, a fair on contemporary art products, and related activities from the ASEAN community.
Museum Siam will host academic discussions and an exhibition on the 241 years of Krung Rattanakosin, while Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan will hold a temple fair and various activities on the same theme.
Bang Lamphu Museum will offer free entry and host community tourism activities led by local youth guides, including art and craft workshops and cultural performances.
Other related events and activities on the 241st anniversary of Krung Rattanakosin will take place at 20 other venues, such as making merit and paying homage to Buddha images.
The BMTA will provide buses and trams for sightseeing, as well as free pick-up and drop-off services at various points.
