Singapore

Is a small island in Southeast Asia whose capital takes the same name. Singapore is a prosperous, affluent city famous for its skyscrapers, bustling nightlife, tropical climate and shopping experience and even though the country is hugely populated, there are plenty of green parks and reserves in this wonderful garden city.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN SINGAPORE

  • Singapore inspires images of food which is good as eating is the main national pastime. There is a huge array of choice from all around the world, including Chinese, Malay, Japanese, Thai, French, Italian and many more being on offer. If you’re looking for local delicacies then you may want to try satay with peanut sauce, chili crab or kaya, an egg and coconut spread eaten on morning toast. 
  • If shopping is on your list, then Singapore is not short on shopping malls whose air conditioning brings a welcome release to the humid climate out on the streets. Shopping Malls tend to have a huge array of shops all competing with best prices. Look out for the Great Singapore Sale (June-July) if you’re looking to purchase a bargain. Clothes, fabrics, electrical goods and of course food are all popular choices for visitors to Singapore.
  • When you want an escape from shopping and eating, then there is always the Esplanade Theatre in Marina Bay for performing arts and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Daily tickets are available for dance, classical, opera and similar cultural events. A trip to Singapore would not be complete without a visit to Raffles Hotel inspired by the Malayan plantations of the 1920s and the legendary Singapore Sling.

EATING OUT & NIGHTLIFE IN SINGAPORE

There is a huge choice for eating out in Singapore ranging from tasty street stalls to fine-dine restaurants. Alcohol is widely available but expensive being highly taxed. Head to the Three Quays – Boat, Clarke and Robertson along the Riverside for lively bars, clubs and popular karaoke bars.

GETTING AROUND IN SINGAPORE

To experience Singapore you have to go out on foot and just explore. Singapore is a world of sights, sounds and smells which can only be experienced up close. Singapore is generally pedestrian-friendly but also very busy so care should be taken crossing roads. Some places good for walking include Chinatown, Little India, the Three Quays and the 9km stroll across the Southern Ridges hills. 

Remember to take an umbrella with you as the rain does fall frequently but typically does not last too long.
