Travel to PHL is “easier” and more enjoyable

The Philippines is the first country in Asia to accept fully vaccinated foreign leisure travelers.

Since February 10, the Philippines has welcomed fully-vaccinated international leisure travelers from visa-free countries. Tourist arrivals have progressively increased since then, according to Puyat, and the Department anticipates an increase over the summer season and the Holy Week holiday in April.

The number of international tourist arrivals reached 47,715, with 26,306 foreign visitors and 21,409 balikbayans, as of February 28.

Apart from the suspension of the country classification system, fully-vaccinated leisure travelers from visa-free countries specified under Executive Order 408 are no longer obliged to undergo quarantine if they can show a negative RT-PCR result.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) both urged for the relaxation of travel bans in late February this year, claiming that they provide no value and contribute to economic and social stress.

To recall, the DOT has been proactive in submitting suggestions to the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) that would balance sector recovery and job restoration without jeopardizing worker and tourist health and safety.

Along with the goal of long-term recovery, Puyat is optimistic that the Philippines’ hosting of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) global tourism summit in April would result in better programs and relationships with other tourism ministers and global leaders.

“We simply want the finest for the industry.” The hosting of the WTTC Summit will benefit the Philippines by demonstrating what the country has to offer the rest of the globe. Our goal, more than the awards we’ve gotten in recent years, is to restore jobs and revenue streams for our tourist workers and stakeholders,” she explained.
